The Process – Creating a high quality specialty coffee

Makin’ Smiles Coffee is a small-batch specialty coffee roastery in Palmyra, Virginia, and getting coffee to you within days of the roast is what the whole business is built around. Coffee begins losing its unique flavors within a month or two of roasting, so every part of this process exists to get a fresher bag into your hands than a grocery store shelf ever could.

What “Small-Batch” Actually Means Here

Makin’ Smiles Coffee roasts in small batches of 2 to 15 pounds at a time, not the 100-plus-pound commercial runs bigger roasters run. A big roaster has to wait for a large batch to sell before it ships, and coffee loses flavor every day it sits on a shelf in the meantime. Small batches mean nothing gets roasted into long-term storage: coffee here is roasted every few days, and your bag is filled from the current batch and usually ships the next morning. Wholesale and bulk orders are roasted the day they’re placed — at that size, a dedicated roast is worth doing. Either way, what arrives at your door is days off the roaster, not months. Coffee is best enjoyed within about 60 days of its roast date, and small batches are what make that window realistic here.

What Happens After You Place an Order?

Your order doesn’t get picked off a warehouse shelf. Here’s what actually happens:

  1. Your order comes in through the website, and your bag is filled from the current batch — usually roasted within the last few days.
  2. Your coffee is ground if you asked for it, at no extra charge, whether that’s for a coffee pot, French press, espresso, or something else.
  3. Your order ships out, or it’s ready for local pickup in Palmyra if you’d rather skip shipping.
  4. Then your coffee makes you smile.

Why Small-Batch Roasting Is Worth It

Makin’ Smiles Coffee is a family-run, veteran- and woman-owned coffee roastery, and every batch is roasted by hand rather than run on autopilot. If you’ve only ever had coffee that sat on a shelf for months before it reached you, here’s what actually changes when it’s fresh. Once your bag arrives, here’s how to store it so that freshness sticks around, and if you’re not sure whether you want a light, medium, or dark roast, this guide walks through the difference.
