How to Buy Coffee as a Gift (When You Have No Idea What They Drink)

Coffee makes a good gift. There’s the smile when they open it, and then a cup every morning that reminds them who sent it. We roast specialty-grade beans by hand, in small batches, to bring out each coffee’s own flavor. It’s the kind of coffee most people would enjoy but wouldn’t buy for themselves. The hard part is picking one when you have no idea whether the person likes a bright light roast or a bold dark one. Here’s how to handle that.

Option One: When in Doubt, Go Medium

If you know nothing at all about their preference, a medium roast is the safest landing spot. It sits between the brighter, fruitier character of a light roast and the bold, toasty character of a dark one, so it rarely feels like a wrong choice to anybody.

Our Honduras Medium Roast is a reliable pick here, with milk chocolate, red apple, and brown sugar notes. It’s also organic and Fair Trade. Costa Rica is another easy one, with spice and toasted marshmallow notes and a mild acidity.

Option Two: Give Them a Range to Explore

Instead of guessing once, let them taste the difference. Our Roaster’s Choice Sample Pack is three 1 LB bags, one light, one medium, and one dark, picked from whatever is roasting best that week. At $50 it ships free on its own, and it turns the gift into something more interesting than a single bag.

If you’d rather pick the three yourself, a combination we like is Morning Smiles Blend for the light, Mexico Medium Roast for the middle, and The Lake Blend for the dark. Our coffee gift guide has a few more combinations worth considering.

Option Three: Let the Gift Keep Arriving

Any of our individual coffees can be set up as a recurring delivery instead of a one-time purchase, at 10% off every shipment. You choose the size, the roast, and whether it comes whole bean or ground, and fresh coffee shows up on a schedule instead of all at once. The sample packs are the exception here, since those are one-time orders only.

For a gift, it means coffee keeps showing up for months, and every delivery is a small reminder of who sent it.

Stocking Stuffers and Teacher Gifts

Need something smaller? Pick Five Samples is five 4 oz bags, and you choose every coffee. It’s $33 with free shipping. The small bags fit right in a stocking, and five of them make an easy teacher gift. For someone who loves espresso, the Espresso Sampler is five coffees our customers already pull as espresso, a half pound of each, for $55 with free shipping.

Whole Bean or Ground?

If you know they own a grinder, whole bean is the better gift because it stays fresh longer. If you’re not sure, choose the Coffee Pot grind. A coffee pot is the most common home setup by a wide margin, and it’s far better than gifting whole beans to someone who has no way to grind them.

There’s never an extra charge for grinding, whichever you pick, and if you need something specific you can leave a note at checkout.

A Few Practical Notes for Gift Orders

  • Shipping is free automatically on orders of $50 or more, which three 1 LB bags usually cover.
  • If you’re local to Palmyra, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Louisa, or the surrounding area, choose Local pickup at checkout and skip the shipping fee entirely. We’ll email you when it’s ready, with the address and pickup details.
  • If you want the coffee sent directly to the recipient, enter their address as the shipping address at checkout.
  • If you’d like us to include a short note, check “Is this a gift?” at checkout and write it in the box that opens. We’ll print it and tuck it in with the coffee. Gift orders never include prices.
  • Buying for clients or your team? Coffee as a Business Gift covers what a business can write off for gifts to clients and employees in 2026.

We’re a small, family-run roastery in Palmyra, Virginia. When you order from us, your coffee comes from a person, not a factory line. It was roasted in small batches, usually within the last few days. That’s the actual difference between a bag from us and a bag off a grocery shelf that may have been roasted months ago. If you’re shopping around Small Business Saturday, that’s what you’re buying.
